“I Don’t Feel Safe”

One of the prominent lingering effects of Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the difficulty of feeling safe and secure in daily life. It feels as if you can be on edge of danger in a moment’s notice, even in a non-threatening environment. You can find yourself being hypervigilant and extremely alert to your surroundings. Sensory sensitivity, jumpiness, anticipation of possible danger, anxiety, and an array of physical and emotional symptoms make it almost impossible to relax. Anything can trigger the “not feeling safe” experience. Loud noises, crowded places, certain smells and images, aggressive behavior, and feeling powerless are common triggers of PTSD.

Resetting Your Nervous System

The main marker of PTSD is dysregulation. Your body gets chronically stuck in “flight- flight-freeze” mode which triggers survival reactions and produces a whole slew of physical and psychological symptoms, all at once, which can feel overwhelming and exhausting. You’re battling anxiety, panic attacks, depression, shutdown, and more. You may find yourself getting easily distressed and unable to consistently calm your body and mind.

At the Holistic Psychotherapy Center, we work with you on releasing trapped emotions, beliefs, and memories that are at the root of your imbalances. We teach your body how to regulate the breath, get grounded, and set healthy boundaries in your life. All this rebuilds your nervous system to be more stable and resilient.

Sources of PTSD

PTSD can develop from a wide range of experiences, not limited to experiences of war, terror attacks, violence, accidents, or natural disasters. Experiences of abuse, violence, bullying, neglect, an unstable home environment, personal health problems, and life changes like the loss of a loved one, can all create a lingering effect of not feeling safe and feeling deeply insecure.

Bearing witness to traumatic events can be traumatic in and of itself. This entails witnessing the trauma of a loved one or trying to help a traumatized person. Even overexposure to traumatic stories and images on TV or social media can trigger PTSD. If you feel you may have developed traumatic stress from witnessing trauma, please seek help for PTSD.

Many patients experience many physical symptoms associated with PTSD. This can manifest as increased sensitivity to allergies, or even new food sensitivities. You may experience aches and pains, fatigue, nausea, headaches, insomnia, and mysterious symptoms and or sensations. PTSD often causes chronic stress symptoms that are hard to diagnose to test. The ongoing symptoms leave you feeling worried, exhausted, and trapped.
